Chapter 1473: August's Regrets

"Did you know these people?" I asked.

August sighed, cleaning his glasses and putting them back up to look at them again.

Then he closed his eyes and massaged his forehead.

"Yes..." he sighed melancholically. "They... they had just started working as adventurers only a year ago."

"Oh..."

"It was as big party of eight too," he sighed. "They were confident that numbers meant they could survive better. They were... well, three of them were childhood friends... the rest were all recruited over the year. All of them coming from smaller villages to the big city with even bigger dreams."

"That's so sad..." I sighed.

They looked a bit like us, there was even a girl with red hair, a boy with green hair, dwarves and demons made almost the entire party, there was a human though.

I wonder, if we hadn't been born with our families, with the powers we were granted and the talents we had.

Would our fate have ended like them too?

What if I didn't have my system or all these skills? What if Aquarina and I were just simple country girls with no famous, heroic parents?

We might have worked even harder to get where these kids got...

Yet... we might have died so easily as well.@@@@

"Hmm..." August sighed. "May you rest in peace."

He started praying after spraying some aromatic, floral liquid over the bodies.

He even lit up some candles, praying calmly.

"Hm, yeah..." Celeste glanced at her own spear. "My spear is made out of cursed souls in a way... Is it like this too?"

"Hmmm, such a weapon wouldn't even be able to cooperate with you in the first place," he said. "But maybe it has become something else. Perhaps... it believes it can pass away peacefully if it protects you and fights for you. You've created a bond with them, with these souls... and through this bond, they might find salvation."

"I see..." Celeste nodded, smiling lightly, caressing her black spear. "Thank you for being by my side all this time."

The spear remained just there, without moving or saying anything.

"Alright then," August nodded. "Now, we shall see what we can do. I'll try to contact each of their families or friends. We'll keep them frozen for now until they identify them and then we cremate them, we offer such services for free."

"Amazing..." I nodded. "Thank you Sir August."

"It's nothing, I would say thanks to you for bringing my kids here," he sighed. "Let's just hope they get a better chance in the next life, hm?"

"Yeah... They'll surely do," I nodded.

After all, I reincarnated, and had a much better life than before, so all he said was true.

I'm sure these young adventurers will come back one day and have a much better life. They'll be happy, and perhaps, one day, they'll met again.

...

We walked out of the room and into the adventurer guild's main quarters, as I noticed a speech patter that August always used.

"Hm, now that I've realized, you love calling everyone here your kids, huh?" I wondered.

"Hahah, you caught me," he laughed. "Yes... of course I do this. The adventurers here, most of them are very young! And much younger than me... To me, they're all my kids. My family! I was once like them, another unruly brat causing mischief and getting almost killed inside dungeons, so I know very well their lives. And I also know most of these young adventurers lack the money because they're either orphans or have very poor families. I feel it's my duty... to be there for them, as their father figure. I... I love all of them, as unruly and annoying as they can be. They're good kids... So that's why when I see them come back like that... I feel a lot

of pain. I bear with it but... you know, it hurts."

"Yeah... I'm sorry," I nodded. "You're an amazing person, sir."

"Hahaha... What with that?" he laughed. "I'm just another old man..."
