Chapter 226: The Veil Breathes
Chapter 226: The Veil Breathes
The clearing was no longer a battlefield, it felt more like a slaughterhouse that had already decided its outcome.
The ground was slick with too much blood. Wolves lay scattered in every direction, some unmoving, and others twitching weakly where they had fallen. The vines quickly took advantage of every weakness, wrapping around the dead and the fallen who struggled against it.
Cain stood at the centre of it all, his chest rising steadily. His tux was streaked with blood that was not his own, and silver burns already healed over as though they had never been there. His red eyes scanned the clearing with mild curiosity, evaluating a puzzle already solved.
Even the West’s fractured fate could only do so much now. The ripples of their blood magic sputtered and cracked against the pressure rolling out from Cain and the demon beside him, bending instead of breaking what they were meant to disrupt.
Theodora stepped forward again, with Aurelius and Harrison now limp on the floor behind her. They were lying in pools of their own blood, muscles screaming as they tried to force themselves back on their feet before the forest took them as the next victims.
"No—" Aurelius groaned, one hand extended in a futile attempt to grab the demon but she was already too close to Celeste.
Celeste cried out as pain lanced through his spine, his knees buckling as he fought to keep the tear in reality sealed. His daggers clattered against the stone as his hands shook violently with sweat pouring down his face. The air around the Veil screamed high-pitched the closer Theo got.
"No—" Celeste gasped, his teeth clenched. "I can’t—"
Theo smiled, and then moved faster than anyone could react.
There was a blur of black and pale flesh, and then Celeste was airborne, his body hurled back with monstrous force. He slammed into the ground near Aurelius, skidding through mud and blood before rolling to a stop.
Aurelius shouted his name and forced his body to move instantly, but Theo was already there.
She grabbed Celeste by the throat and lifted him effortlessly, his feet leaving the ground as his hands scrabbled weakly at her wrist.
"You did well," She murmured almost kindly, "But you’ll die like the rest of your kind did,"
Her other hand pressed flat against his chest, and then Celeste screamed.
Power ripped out of him violently, his stabilising presence collapsing like shattered glass. The Veil convulsed a few times like something inside was about to explode outward.
Aurelius came from behind and slammed into Theo with everything he had.
It barely slowed her.
She released Celeste’s limp body, letting him collapse at Aurelius’s feet, and turned her attention fully to the tear in reality.
Now that the stabiliser was down, nothing was holding it back. With every step she took closer to it, the convulsing effect grew. The earth began to tremble like an earthquake of high magnitude was about to hit them all.
Those standing fell, and everyone could only watch in awe and horror...as Theo finally stood next to the Veil.
And then, the Veil split open!
A heavier Darkness than the normal mist poured out of it, crawling along the ground like liquid shadow that swallowed light and devoured sound. The temperature dropped so fast that every breath turned to frost in the air.
Then, behind the Darkness, figures began to emerge.
Demons.
They were huge, solid, towering things that were horned, clawed, winged, and their skin etched with strange runes, along with scars from wars older than the Moon Goddess herself. Their eyes burned with ancient hunger as they stepped fully into the world.
One after another.
An army.
Wolves broke, watching the true horror unfold in front of their eyes.
Some tried to run, and most couldn’t even stand.
The demons moved with horrifying precision, tearing into the already broken werewolf lines. Claws punched through ribcages, and jaws snapped shut around skulls. Blood sprayed, and screams cut off mid-breath.
Theodora watched it unfold like a proud queen surveying her kingdom.
Cain was next to her and tilted his head. "Beautiful," he murmured, amused.
Then the Veil pulsed again, and something bigger moved within it.
The demons already present bowed from outside, and the whole forest reacted once again.
Then, a massive silhouette stepped through the tear, its horns curling upward like crowned obsidian, and wings unfolding slowly. His presence crushed down on the clearing, stealing every breath of air that was left to breathe.
The wildest thing about the demon was that...he looked exactly like Cain.
Same face, same eyes and the same smile - only that his looked far more dangerous and refined.
Theo’s breath caught as she saw him, and her eyes filled with something achingly close to devotion.
"Alcaeus," she whispered.
The demon smiled at her, and the world seemed to tilt around that single expression, "My heart," he said, his voice sounding Alpha, demonic and godly all at once, "You kept your promise and freed me,"
"Of course," She came closer to him, "I’ve missed you, my love,"
He cupped her face softly, "Mate," He murmured.
Cain didn’t move from where he stood.
He simply looked at Alcaeus.
At a greater version of himself.
Alcaeus was said to have died after his lab exploded, but Alcaeus never died. He had built a machine that tore a new dimension open - the Veil - that led to a new realm. But one thing went wrong, and everything exploded. The explosion had thrown Alcaeus into the Veil, and the Veilborns had used that opportunity to seal the veil, trapping him inside.
That was the real story.
Alcaeus stepped closer, and the Bone Pearl at Cain’s wrist began to crack, glowing brighter as ancient magic screamed in protest.
"You were always meant to be me," Alcaeus said softly, "And I... was always meant to return,"
Theo reached for both of them, her hands shaking with reverence.
Then, the merge happened violently.
Light exploded outward as Cain screamed in treasured release, and Alcaeus dissolved into pure darkness and power, slamming into Cain’s body like a tidal wave.
Cain’s bones began to crack and reform, while his veins burned black beneath his skin. His aura expanded outward, crushing everything beneath it.
When the light finally faded, Cain stood taller.
Horns curled from his temples, and his eyes burned molten red and black. His presence alone flooded the forest with a new kind of power, and the Hallow grew more in strength and speed.
Theo’s lips curled into laughter, and she let out a sound of pure, unrestrained joy before throwing herself into his arms.
"You’re back," she breathed.
He wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close, "I never left,"
