Chapter 729 - 640: Apocalypse Date
Chapter 729 - 640: Apocalypse Date
"A bird’s life experiences several migrations, You, do you think they have a home?"
"Wherever it’s warm is their home, just like us. When a place is no longer suitable for residence, we also choose to move."
Xu Xiaoyou caressed the glass of the counter,
"Just like the people in this city."
She thought of the Titan People that Tang Xin mentioned to her, who were forced to leave their ancestral Tulatan due to the arrival of the Golden Creatures.
From Xu Xiaoyou’s perspective, she couldn’t quite understand why the Titan People were so eager to return to that plain, putting in generations of effort, and even a Demigod perished abroad for this reason.
That plain was no longer suitable for survival. They could completely choose a new place to reside and rebuild their civilization, which is a more rational and developmentally aligned approach.
"You." Chichu Chun sensed Xu Xiaoyou’s thoughts and after a moment of contemplation, spoke, "Have you ever heard this saying."
"Where my heart finds peace, there is my home."
"If one day, in your world, Sister Tang, me, Angelina, and Sister Youyou all disappeared, and you found yourself alone in another time and space, would you want to return to our time and space?"
Xu Xiaoyou did not answer this question.
"Some things cannot be measured with material, they carry hope and spiritual sustenance, and some kind of inheritance, such a place is a ’home,’ right?"
"A bird’s life will fly over many places, warm, cold, magnificent scenery, desolate and vast, they will have many stopping places, but I think, in their hearts, there must be a place they yearn for, where warmth blooms with flowers and there are abundant wings for shelter."
Xu Xiaoyou turned her head, discovering that Chichu Chun had somehow crawled under the counter, rummaging and emerging dusty and dirty.
"Look, You, this."
Upon closer inspection, she found a disc filled with scratches in the girl’s hand.
"This is...?"
"’Union Day,’" Chichu Chun said, "This is a film from the Silver Era. I’ve heard of it, never thought I’d see the disc here."
In today’s era, recording and projecting through DVD players have long become a thing of the past, discs mostly represent a symbolic meaning, essentially being a ’key,’ a key to unlocking the movie files.
In the last years of the Silver Era, the pace of the era was fast, the wealth gap irreparable, and social conflicts irreconcilable, forming a strong contrast between the ever-changing high technology and the increasingly depressed human spirit.
The broad concept of ’movies’ had long disappeared, most films made by the Nighttime Dreams Company were visually impactful, and by wearing a ’Dream Wanderer,’ one could experience everything the protagonist did. These films were largely formulaic, monotonous, and devoid of any substantive meaning.
Therefore, there were film collectors like Chichu Chun who often collected early Silver Era films, from that politically, economically, and culturally flourishing era. As the older generation of film collectors would say, good films from that era sprouted like mushrooms after rain, emerging in bunches every now and then.
Unfortunately, very few films have survived to this day, with most being forgotten in time.
"Why not find a cinema to watch it together later?" Chichu Chun suggested.
"Let’s hope those projector devices still work."
Xu Xiaoyou nodded in agreement.
"There’s always a way."
Leaving the general store, the two girls proceeded forward with the Predator and soon found the Predators’ lair in the eastern district, which appeared like a massive, deformed sphere, enveloped in the city sky with a web-like structure, with thick flesh connecting between the skyscrapers and the sphere, casting an expansive shadow.
Chichu Chun looked up at the massive object in the sky and remarked:
"It seems the insect queen of this lair is no simple one; this entity is not just any Predator insect queen."
"It devoured the genes of the original Predator insect queen. Judging from the species seen nearby, it also devoured Earth Drillers, Wrenches, Seeders, and Genetic Weavers... Just how many of its kind has this entity consumed?"
"The gene pool in the insect nest armory likely contains genes from at least a dozen Insect Races."
"Hiss..."
A stag beetle noticed the commotion and glanced over warily.
It dragged its bull-sized body over, nostrils flaring with hot breaths.
Its footsteps heavy and dragging, slowly approaching.
As it rounded a corner, a Predator pounced out, its Mantis Blade-like arms precisely wedging into the groove of the stag beetle’s neck armor.
Attacked, the stag beetle retreated in panic, its hooves stamping the ground repeatedly, tossing the Predator about.
Seeing her little subordinate about to get crushed into paste, Chichu Chun helplessly released a small range of her pheromones.
Under the influence of the pheromones, the stag beetle settled down momentarily, eyes dazed.
Noticing the commotion, the approaching sentinel insects fluttered away.
Chichu Chun gestured Xu Xiaoyou to silence.
If the insect queen of this lair discovered her presence, the Eight-Spider Nest Mother would undoubtedly know immediately, and she didn’t want her and Xu Xiaoyou’s leisurely time disturbed by elite Insect Races.
Who knows why, but the Eight-Spider Nest Mother seemed to be frantically searching for her. Whenever trying to weave a subnetwork, Chichu Chun often felt she would be discovered by the Eight-Spider Nest Mother, and an enraged Eight-Spider Nest Mother would devour her mind along with the subnetwork.
But the reality was, until the subnetwork completely detached from the Eight-Spider Nest Mother’s influence, there was no response whatsoever.
Maybe the Eight-Spider Nest Mother was too caught up with her Insect Race affairs to bother with her little schemes?
Chichu Chun thought.
"No wonder, task forces go missing now and then in City 075; such a massive insect nest developed behind the frontline. Today it’s unlucky, facing us." Chichu Chun snapped her fingers.
The stag beetle lowered its head, dragging its huge body towards them, its eyes still muddled and confused.
The Predator got the hint, slashing with its Mantis Blade, causing the stag beetle’s abdomen to burst open in bloody streaks, leaking viscera along with warm blood, revealing just enough space for the two of them.
"I’ll stay here," Xu Xiaoyou said. "Thistle Xuedong said she hopes you’ll toughen yourself."
"No, You." Chichu Chun playfully pulled Xu Xiaoyou by the hand, leaning into her ear.
"What, planning to chicken out already?"
"If I take action, it wouldn’t even take a minute to solve this insect nest," Xu Xiaoyou responded calmly.
"So what, I could blast it to bits with one shot too, just don’t want too much attention," Chichu Chun shrugged.
"Let’s just consider this part of our date, shall we?" Chichu Chun tiptoed backward, pulling Xu Xiaoyou’s hand,
"Stealth mission into the insect nest and finally quietly taking out the insect queen, how romantic."
"Two people increase the target size, making stealth missions more likely to fail," Xu Xiaoyou reminded.
Chichu Chun’s lips curled up slightly, "If the stealth mission fails, then let’s turn this place upside down!"
