Chapter 787. Slapping the crown prince in the face.
Chapter 787. Slapping the crown prince in the face.
The moment Kailen and the crown prince of the Venzula Empire locked gazes, all eyes were on them.
Prince Daevaris stared at Kailen Darkhaven and smiled.
He had received a special mission from the royal faction to recruit Kailen Darkhaven into the royal faction as soon as possible. The mission also required that if Kailen Darkhaven refused to join the royal faction, he would become a threat to the royal family in the future, and therefore he had to be eliminated. He was either valuable as an ally or a threat otherwise.
At the time he received the mission, he was on an academy mission in the 8th continent. He rushed to complete the mission and returned to recruit Kailen Darkhaven as soon as possible. To think by the time he would return, the fellow would have already joined the academic faction.
However, it was not too late for him to join the royal faction. Kailen Darkhaven could terminate his membership in the academic faction right?
"Mr. Darkhaven, I’m sure you already know why I’m here," the vampire said. "I would like to officially invite you to join the royal faction. Surely, it has not been long since you joined the academic faction. So, it definitely won’t be a problem to terminate your membership with them, right? Not to mention, the benefits of joining the royal faction greatly outweigh the academic faction."
As he was speaking, Kailen was using emotional resonance to glean his thoughts from his facial expressions.
"Eliminate if I reject his offer, right? This person will most likely suggest a death duel if I refuse the offer. However, he has deep-rooted pride. I can use that against him to buy some time and raise my strength. When I’m strong enough, I will eliminate him. It’s clear I’m an enemy of not just the royal faction now but the royal family at large. The fact that he’s the one to invite me to join the royal faction implies that the empress is most likely behind this. There’s no need to have any reservations then." These thoughts flashed through Kailen’s thoughts in a moment.
He replied to the prince under the gazes of several in the vicinity.
"I’m truly honored by the offer, Your Highness. However, I very much prefer my humble station. The academic faction is well suited for me."
Kailen Darkhaven’s words caused many to nod in admiration. Several academic faction members could not help but admire Kailen Darkhaven for having such spine.
As for the royal faction members who had arrived with the crown prince, glints of ruthlessness flashed through their eyes. Since he had decided to reject the offer to join the royal faction, then he would be eliminated. The crown prince would make sure to kill him in the death arenas because of the mission requirements.
Daevaris was quite surprised. Kailen Darkhaven had really rejected the offer. He admired Kailen Darkhaven for being decisive.
But, did Kailen Darkhaven really understand the gravity of the words he had spoken? Did that even matter? Since Kailen Darkhaven had made his decision, then he should be prepared to pay the price for his actions. He had to be eliminated.
"Very well. I suggest we have a friendly spar in the death arenas then. How about you pick a time?" Daevaris said.
Several in the vicinity sighed. This prince was very sly. A friendly spar in the death arenas? What a load of bullshit. Spouting so much nonsense with such a straight face.
Also, he had announced it in public. He wanted to use the public to trap Kailen Darkhaven to make a hasty decision with a lapse in judgment. Would Kailen Darkhaven try to keep his pride and accept the death duel?
"Your Highness is really good at cracking jokes," Kailen smiled. "Surely, a puny rank 3 novice stage Transcendent like me cannot hold a single candle against someone of your calibre, a rank 5 novice stage Transcendent known throughout the empire, right, Your Highness? Could it be that Your Highness thinks the current me can suddenly cross ranks and fight you at your esteemed level? Surely that is not the case. Therefore, Your Highness is very good at humoring me. Thank you for the joke, Your Highness."
After these words, Kailen Darkhaven melded with the void and disappeared before anyone could even react, leaving several people shocked with how things had played out. Several realized that Kailen Darkhaven did not care about his pride. He only cared about his life.
Prince Daevaris thought he could use psychological and manipulative acumen to bait Kailen Darkhaven into killing him in the death arenas. However, Kailen Darkhaven had used a few words to completely slap the prince in the face. After which, he disappeared from the place.
What sort of lunatic was this?
Even if he didn’t accept the death duel challenge from the prince in the academy, surely with the way things had turned out, the crown prince would send assassins after him when Kailen Darkhaven left the academy for missions. Would he survive? Or would he die?
Contrary to their thoughts, the crown prince mused, inwardly, completely calm, "What an interesting fellow. It’s a pity he has to die. Even if the mission had not stated he should be eliminated, I can’t just let him off for insulting me, right? Instead of sending assassins after him, I will kill him myself in the most humiliating way possible when he gets to the rank 5 novice stage Transcendent level."
As for the academic faction members, they all applauded Darkhaven’s wit and no-nonsense personality.
A couple of them did not think much of him earlier. So what if he had gotten first place in the NGU competition and obtained a slot to the academy? This was a place where geniuses were as numerous as clouds. Even someone hailed as a once-in-a-long-time prodigy could become mediocre here.
However, they had just realized there was more to this new member than he let on. The way he had handled the crown prince in public had proven that he had a mind that navigated complex and political situations with great ease. Someone like that was not simple.
They really looked forward to how the situation would turn out in the future. Would the new member of the academic faction make a name for himself, or would the crown prince from the royal faction eliminate him?
One would think that the stronger members of the academic faction would get involved in the matter. However, that did not happen. Just because they were all members of the same faction did not mean that they fought everyone’s battles for them.
There were definitely some who could challenge the strength of the crown prince, observing the exchange from the open hub area of the academic faction. However, they didn’t make any moves. This was an academy of Transcendents. Everyone here had extraordinary demeanors, who knew the consequences of their decisions before they made them. Everyone relied on their power to solve their problems.
They believed Kailen Darkhaven was well aware of the repercussions of his actions. And he could deal with them on his own. Even if he couldn’t, who cared? So what if he was a member of the academic faction?
At most, everyone here was in the academy to grow stronger, not to form brotherhood cliques and fight the battles of others for them. No one wants to get involved carelessly in someone’s private matters and end up in an unfortunate situation at the end.
But to be honest, they were satisfied with how Kailen Darkhaven had dealt with the crown prince. Serves that bastard right.
