Chapter 13 Polite Friends
Chapter 13 Polite Friends
After helping Hamerlin back to lie down on the straw bed, Rom turned around and took down the medicine pot that was hanging on the edge of the fire-gathering array, which was gurgling and steaming.
After pouring out a bowl of thick, dark herbal soup, he personally handed it to his teacher, then turned and walked out of the stone house again.
In the open space, Jack was crouching awkwardly beside the half-charred wolf carcass.
His once exquisite white robe was now stained with snow, blood, and charred from the explosion.
Jack, suppressing his nausea, gripped a short dagger for self-defense and began groping inside the direwolf's shattered entrails.
Soon, he felt a hard object under the membrane.
"Ha! Finally found it! This beast's magic crystal is actually growing near its intestines... Ugh!"
Jack gagged, excitedly pulled a blood-stained object from a pile of minced meat, jogged over to Rom, and handed it to him with both hands.
Luo Mu took it; it was heavy, and indeed it was a magic crystal.
He wiped the blood off the crystal in the snow, and only then did its true form appear.
This magic crystal is the size of an egg, yet it is crystal clear and has a deep, icy blue color.
Even in the dim light, one could see wisps of magical energy, like liquid, slowly flowing within.
This magic crystal is of quite good quality, much purer than the five murky, low-grade magic crystals offered as tribute in Blackrock Town.
"Lord Rom, this is a [Intermediate Magic Crystal]!"
Jack exclaimed excitedly from the side.
As he rubbed the blood off his hands with clean snow, he stared at the magic crystal in Rom's hand, his voice filled with undisguised envy:
"No wonder this Winter Wild Wolf is so strong; it actually contains such a good magic crystal inside its body."
"Lord Rom, a magic crystal of this quality could fetch at least fifty gold coins on the black market in Red Dragon City, enough to buy a high-grade magic wand inlaid with gems!"
Fifty gold coins?
Luo Mu raised an eyebrow slightly.
Magic crystals are an important material for mages to enhance their strength and refine high-level magic potions. In this world, they are not only an energy source, but also an extremely valuable form of hard currency.
I wonder how much mental computing power the system can provide by absorbing this intermediate-level magic crystal?
He glanced at the system panel. After testing Fireball multiple times and then running Wind Walk for a while, he now had 35 points of mental computing power left.
It's enough for now, so there's no rush to replenish it. We'll keep this magic crystal for now and study it later.
Rom put the magic crystal into his pocket, glanced up at the dark forest around him, and reminded them:
"The stench of blood outside is too strong; I don't know if it will attract any awakened monsters. Come inside with me and meet my teacher."
Upon hearing that he was going to see Hamelin, Jack immediately became nervous.
He quickly smoothed out the wrinkles on his robe, hastily brushed off the snow and bits of flesh from his body, took a deep breath, and obediently followed behind Rombe like a college student waiting for a job interview.
Pushing open the wooden door of the stone house and following Rom into the house, Jack couldn't help but secretly glance around out of the corner of his eye.
The interior of the stone house was very simple, even somewhat shabby.
Several uneven stone benches, a hard bed covered with hay, and a table piled with various magic books, herbs, and some common tools.
Only the fire array burning orange flames in the very center of the house radiated a warm heat, almost too intensely so.
"This is Jack, a second-tier mage from the city."
Rom walked to the bedside and briefly introduced Hamelin, "We just met, so we're friends."
Upon hearing the words "second-tier mage," Hamelin, who was lying on the bed, was clearly surprised.
A second-tier mage is considered part of the regular army of mages in Red Dragon City, and their status is even higher than that of a low-tier mage like myself who has spent my entire life on the border.
How come Luo Mu made such a friend after just one trip out?
Although he had doubts, Hamelin was a worldly old man. Leaning against the wall, he nodded neither humbly nor arrogantly, forcing a smile:
"My humble abode is simple, and I am also injured, so please forgive my lack of hospitality. In this desolate place, I hope Master Jack will take good care of my student."
Jack was flattered and overwhelmed, and dared not presume to speak arrogantly in front of Hamelin.
He quickly stepped forward, bowed deeply, and spoke with utmost respect:
"I have long admired Master Hamelin's reputation! You are too kind; it is my honor to visit you!"
As he bowed, Jack secretly glanced at the old man on the bed out of the corner of his eye.
He originally thought that someone who could teach a disciple like Luo Mu and repair a large-scale formation instantly must be a powerful mage.
But the person in front of him was not only thin and bony, but he also couldn't sense any magical energy fluctuations. He looked like a frail old man on his deathbed.
That matches the information recorded in the manual quite well: a first-tier mage.
This was so different from the image of the mysterious grandmaster hidden in a remote area that I had imagined.
"Could it be that the only true master is Rom?" Jack wondered to himself.
However, the thought of how he had arrogantly tried to squeeze the master and apprentice out of Blackrock Town yesterday, leaving the old man to die in the snow, made Jack feel somewhat embarrassed and sent chills down his spine.
Fortunately, the old man didn't know what happened yesterday, otherwise I would have chopped him to pieces with a fireball.
Just as Jack was lost in thought...
"Cough cough cough—!"
Hamelin, who had just finished drinking the herbal soup, suddenly started coughing violently.
He clutched his chest, his face contorted in pain, and a trickle of black blood flowed from the corner of his mouth. He looked even worse than yesterday.
"Teacher!" Luo Mu quickly stepped forward and patted the old man on the back.
Upon seeing this, Jack immediately realized that this was a good opportunity for him to curry favor and redeem himself.
"Lord Romwell, I learned some basic medical principles in the city before. May I take a look at the master?" Jack volunteered.
"it is good."
Rombe stepped aside, and Jack stepped forward, carefully unbuttoning Hamelin's shirt.
Jack frowned when he saw the wound.
Although the deep, bone-revealing scratches on the old mage's chest had scabbed over, the surrounding blood vessels had taken on a strange purplish-black color, resembling a spider web.
Moreover, these dark blood vessels are spreading towards the heart.
"This is abyssal toxin from a monster."
Jack gasped, turned to look at Rom, and said in a low voice:
"This toxin is extremely stubborn; ordinary anti-inflammatory herbs are completely ineffective. Even after the skin and flesh have healed, the toxin will travel through the magical pathways to the heart, which could be fatal!"
"Only a high-level [Holy Healing] spell can completely purify the toxins."
"[Holy Healing]?"
Rom was familiar with it; he had heard his teacher mention it. It was a healing spell based on light magic.
Light elemental magic is known for its blessings and purification; it is a pure form of magic.
Unfortunately, in the entire Blackrock Town, Hamelin was the only one who knew magic, and Jack was a wind mage, so he couldn't be relied on. Where could they find a light mage?
It seems impossible to save Hamelin's life in this remote place.
Luo Mu covered the teacher with his clothes again and said decisively:
"In that case, I'll go to Red Dragon City for help. There must be a Light Mage in the Mage Guild there who is proficient in Holy Healing."
"No, it's too late."
Jack shook his head. "It's too far from Red Dragon City. Even with Windwalk, it would take at least seven or eight days to make a round trip."
"Moreover, the mountains are now blocked by heavy snow, making the roads too difficult to travel. Master Hamelin's injuries... the toxins are spreading too quickly, I'm afraid he won't last that long."
